Get your home ready for winter by following these simple steps.

It’s easy to think that preparing your home for winter is an over reaction or indeed just something that you do not have to worry about, but with Glasgow winters being so unpredictable its always better to be prepared and with the way 2020 has been going so far then it wouldn’t surprise us if we get hit with a Beast From The East 2!

Start by insulating pipes.

Exposed pipes are one of the main areas that can cause major issues in the winter. Water inside these pipes can freeze and cause the pipe to burst when temperatures are low enough. A quick and easy fix is to buy some pipe insulation from any major hardware store.

General garden maintenance.

Overgrowing tree branches can also cause major problems, during a strong these can easy break off and damage your property, so make sure to trim or cut anything that you think could cause a problem. Sweep up any autumn leaves and take out any weeds from your driveway.

Gutter maintenance

During the winter it is easy for gutters to get blocked, resulting in a build up of water which can lead to leaking or flooding issues within your property. Get a tall ladder, put on a pair of gloves and safely clear them out by hand, or of there is a major build up, a small garden trowel should do the trick. If you are not confident doing this yourself then call in the experts or any local handyman.

Door locks

Locks can very easily because frozen during very low temperatures resulting in you being locked out in the freezing cold! Get prepared by spraying a little WD40 into each door lock, then turn the key in the lock. The WD40 lubricates the pins inside the lock to prevent sticking.

Garden Hoses

If you have an outdoor hoses, remove any residual water before the first freeze so it doesn’t expand and crack the hose.

Block any drafts around your property

If you get a lit candle and hold it along each windowsill/baseboard in your house you will be able to tell if there is a draft as the candle will start flickering. A quick solution to this problem is to reseal the draft area with a clear paintable caulking solution that you can pick up from any hardware store.

Lucky enough to have a fireplace?

We recommend getting it professionally cleaned and inspected by a certified chimney sweep before the winter, this can mirage any problems that may arise from the cold winter weather.
